Kemps was recently specified by StudioFractal to manufacture a set of bespoke fittings for the international departure lounge at Heathrow Airport T3. We worked closely with Target Site Services to realise StudioFractal’s lighting design.
The brief was for suspended ceiling lighting above a central seating area. The designs from StudioFractal included twin halo fittings with LED spotlights. These spotlights were positioned at intervals to create scalloped curves of light on the ceiling panels above.
We used 18 4000K LED downlights on the 3.3m diameter ring and a further 5 downlights on the 1.7m diameter ring. Each spotlight has a unique adjustable convex lens which is used to achieve the distinctive scalloped effect.
The rings were rolled to the correct diameter from a lightweight Aluminium channel, before being powder coated in Anodic Gold as per the specification.
We assembled the fittings at our Leeds facility and our LED team tested their effectiveness over 2-3 days. Following a successful assessment, the finished products were carefully dismantled and delivered to the Heathrow site. The whole process took less than 4 weeks from the initial order.
Senior Lighting Designer at StudioFractal, Ben Hollands, explained why they choose Kemps for this unique project:
‘We selected Kemps to manufacture and supply the lighting feature on Heathrow’s T3 International Departure Lounge because we trust their ability to closely follow our designs and have faith in their expertise in meeting challenging deadlines with a robust, high quality product.’
This is the second project we’ve completed with StudioFractal at Heathrow. Take a look at these bespoke luminaires we built for the First Class Wing at T5.
