Heathrow T5 First Class WingLondon

Kemps recently created a series of bespoke luminaires for the new security zone of Heathrow Terminal 5’s First Class Wing.

The security portal has been designed to enable first class passengers to proceed through to the lounges in under 5 minutes.

The brief

The space needed to have a first class atmosphere whilst being practically lit. We were specified by StudioFractal to design an LED light engine that could provide over 10,000 lumens and would provide the required light levels.

The finished luminaires would be wall and pole mounted across the space to downlight various areas. To make matters slightly more complex, the required heatsink needed to be formed with a slight curve to fit the main luminaire body which was already secured on site.

Diffusing light

In total, 90 Luxeon Z LEDs were incorporated into the 1000mm x 100mm engines, which also had a micro-prismatic face to help diffuse the light. Each of the 14 wall and pole mounted luminaires were driven by a remote mounted 100W DALI dimmable driver.

Ian Payne, Design Director at StudioFractal and lead designer on the project, said:

“Our approach for the First Direct Access at Terminal 5 was to create a 5 star hospitality look and feel whilst meeting Heathrow sustainable and operational standards. The challenge was to design an integrated, highly efficient lighting solution, including bespoke feature luminaires, which complied with stringent ASIAD safety requirements.

Working with Kemps, we realised a well-crafted product family that retained its luxury appeal. We’ve called upon Kemps expertise on many award winning projects and their support was instrumental in making the First Direct Access a success.”

This was a stern test for our team but our design knowledge and engineering experience enabled us to deliver an effective solution, on time and within budget.
