The HUB, Merrion HouseLeeds

Merrion House is a large office building in the centre of Leeds that’s recently been refurbished to house Leeds City Council employees.

Back in January 2018, we were brought into the project by contractors, BAM, to supply a bespoke element for the reception area. BAM had previously been let down by a different lighting supplier on the complex element and wanted a supplier who could deliver what was required, with no complications.

The design

The Kemps team met with BAM’s project managers and looked over the concept. We were confident we could design and manufacture the luminaires within budget and in time for the arranged completion date. We began by creating a sectional design sample.

Initial tests

  • The appearance of the light through the micro prism diffuser
  • The lumen levels
  • The strength of the fixture

The initial tests proved successful and our engineers began working on the full set of 3D drawings. The finished design was going to be CNC laser cut, assembled and installed in modules, which would help the process move quickly and minimise disruption to the site.

Various different ceiling heights in the lobby meant the luminaires needed to be a mixture of suspended and surface fixed. This was accounted for by taking accurate details from the drawings and transferring them with precision into our design.

The results

In order to meet the project’s tight deadlines, the luminaires were all pre-built and tested in our factory, before being dismantled and delivered. Close coordination with BAM was required at this point as the Kemps team weren’t going to be on-site to rectify any issues.

This was initially a worry, however, due to careful planning and rigorous testing, there were no issues during install. Everything ran to plan and in total, around 40m of bespoke 4000K LED, DALI dimmable luminaires were designed and manufactured by the Kemps team.

We were excited by the enquiry from BAM and intrigued to be involved in such a high profile Leeds project. As a local company, it’s always rewarding to work on a project where our staff can see the end results and feel proud of their involvement.

A tremendous amount of time and effort went into this project and fantastic to see the end results. Again, our team have gone the extra mile and delivered where others couldn’t, which is a credit to them.
